The First Questions
How will your content be written & posted . . . are you a do-it-yourselfer or will you pay a marketing professional?
That question leads to more questions. Do you have a marketing budget? How much do you plan to spend on marketing?
If you plan to do-it-yourself, do you know how? Do you have the time to learn? Will you have the time it will take to post, track analytics and reply to comments?
The focus of this post will be on the do-it-yourselfer. Should you decide to hire a marketing pro, they will know how to get the job done.
What is your Purpose?
When you’ve answered The First Questions for yourself, then think about your purpose for posting Social Media content. Do you want to Educate, Inform or Entertain? Are you posting for business or for pleasure?
Where to Begin
After answering the question of Purpose, you will know which Social Media sites to begin with.
If your purpose is purely personal, that’s easy. You can use Facebook and Instagram. Facebook keeps friends and associates updated about you. Instagram does the same using images that show what you’re doing with a couple of lines of text. These are 2 good options for posting about your interests too. There are special interest groups to join for interests from apple picking, to zebra watching. (I made up those group names.)
Is your purpose is for business/career,? You will want to join LinkedIn, and Twitter. There are groups for your line of business on both sites. You can build your network especially on LinkedIn.
Use only 1 or 2 Social Media Sites at First
The reason to use only 1 or 2 Social Media sites to post to at first is so you can easily see what’s working. This is especially important for business/career content. That’s what analytics is for. Analytics let you know what is getting the most attention, the most clicks and comments. Your website host should have an analytics chart you can see. Analytics are also provided when you use a Social Media management app such as Buffer. By scheduling posts on Buffer, you will see which of your posts got attention, and when.
An additional reason to post to only a couple of sites is so you don’t get overwhelmed. After all, you are not in the business of posting to social media, your purpose is to get the word out about your business.
After you See Which Social Media Sites Work Best
When you see which Social Media sites work for you, and which ones don’t work so well, then it’s time to “up the ante” so to speak. Then you will want to try other Social Media sites such as Pinterest Groups, Facebook Pages that you manage and post to, YouTube (for video content), Snapchat and Instagram.
Best of luck posting on the best Social Media sites for you!
