3 Easy Steps - Worksheet Method

STEP 1: Find Some Inspiration

Write a list of 5 areas of life that you’re most interested in. These areas do not have to be related to each other. This is the beginning stage. Your list can be as versatile as you are. You are the writer, the decision maker. Don’t overthink it and don’t spend too long on Step 1. Give yourself 5 minutes.

STEP 2: Select Your Best Inspiration

Select one of the areas you listed in Step 1. This is the area that gives you the most energy and excitement. It’s the subject that you know about, or that you want to learn about. Here again, try not to think ahead to the research and the actual writing. Write your best inspiration at the top of another sheet of paper. Now you have the topic of your book.

STEP 3: Define Your Topic

Determine if your book will be fiction or non-fiction. Most topics can be either. An exception would be if you’re writing about scientific research, your book would be non-fiction. On the other hand, if your book is based on the true story of someone conducting research, your book would be non-fiction.

Now is the time to decide who your readers will be. That will help to define your topic further. Stay on topic within your subject. You can do that by keeping a list of keywords and phrases, also called keyword strings. These keywords define your book. This is how readers will search for and find your book.  You will refer back to your list of keywords/phrases throughout the writing and marketing (metadata) of your book, so be sure to keep it handy.

Conclusion

Now you’ve discovered the inspiration for your book, selected the very best inspiration for you and defined your topic.

Next on the agenda is to write the Introduction of your book. The introduction tells readers what they will read about, plus it serves as your reference point. What I mean by that is that you will refer back to the introduction to remind yourself exactly what your book is about. It serves as a basic road map for you as your book unfolds.
