76 years ago today: A small group of American paratroopers dropped into a field near the dike in Randwijk, Holland. They were taken unawares by the German SS gunners stationed there. 4 of the group of 5 paratroopers sustained injuries when a grenade thrown by the Germans exploded as they landed.
CAPTAIN RICHARD WINTERS, 101ST AIRBORNE DIVISION HAD A PLAN
Captain Richard Winters acted quickly and gathered 34 troops. They set out to shoot the German gunners stationed on the dike. All 7 of the German SS gunners were shot when Winters climbed to the top of the dike and strategically positioned his troops in shooting range. Then Winters with his small contingent marched 3 abreast toward the SS divisions that planned to overtake the island held by the Allies.
THE ELEMENT OF SURPRISE
The element of surprise worked in favor of Winters and his small group. There were two SS divisions planning to overtake the outpost on the island. They became confused and disorganized in the face of Winters’ troops approaching 3 abreast, an efficient war tactic employed by Roman troops. At the end of that day, 35 American troops had defeated nearly 300 German SS troops to maintain control of the outpost. #worldwar2
You made several fine points there. I did a search on the subject matter and found mainly people will agree with your blog. Emma Barthel Magill
